“Hopeless Ballads” is the second EP by Kandma, coming after a 7-year-long hiatus from their 2013 debut “Demur” - a rather dark mixture of alternative rock, ambient and trip hop.
Kandma resumed working together in 2017 as a three-piece, and lacking a drummer.
This meant that most of the writing process took place in a domestic setting rather than a rehearsal room, pushing an already planned twist of style towards an even more laid-back, intimate and soulful sound.
After some rehearsing sessions with drummer Massimo Palmirotta, the band decided to pick 4 of the songs they were working on and wrap them up in an EP.
“Hopeless Ballads” takes its inspiration from several musical realms and tries to combine them to create a sober, yet multi-faceted and colourful sound.
The result is 4 carefully arranged songs that hint to 70’s rock, soul and bossa nova, all of which are tied from a subtly haunting, at times ambigouos mood.
The title of the EP itself reflects this ambiguity: “Hopeless Ballads” is both a collection of “hopeless attempts at writing ballads” and a hint to the darker, cinematic feeling that fills the recording.
